Add A Watermark
To Protect Your Images

The idea of adding a watermark to your images to protect them from online theft has been around for some time now.

Although unfortunately it does not guarantee that your images will not be used without your permission it does deter the less determined image user.

There are many ways to change your images online so that they cannot be printed or used on other websites.

However I am just going to show you the simplest and easiest way to add a text graphic to the centre of your image, which will make your image less appealing to use without permission.

As you will want to protect all of your images that you place online you will want to create an automated action within Photoshop so that a watermark can be added at a click of a button instead of going through the whole manual process yourself for each image.

The following instructions will incorporate how you set up this action the first time you add a text graphic to your image.

How to add a water mark and record the action.

  • Open your image in Photoshop
  • Make sure the Action palette is visible on screen (Choose Window from the drop down menu at top of screen and click Actions)
  • On the action palette click the button Create New Action
  • In the pop up menu that appears name your action Water Mark for instance and click on the record button
  • Click on the Text icon on your tools palette
  • Choose the font, size of text and colour of text from the top menu
  • Click on the image where you want the text to begin and type your text
  • You can move your text around the image my using the curser tool and dragging the text.

You will want to make the text less bold so that your image can still be viewed easily. This can be done by making the text a little less transparent.

  • With the text tool selected drag across your text to highlight it
  • Click on menu Layer>Layer Style>Blending Options
  • A new palette will appear
  • Slide the opacity slide downward until you get the desired level of transparency you require.
  • Click Ok when you are happy

  • Go back to the Action palette and click on the Stop record button at the bottom of the palette.

Now in future when you want to add a text graphic to your images you simply click on the action Watermark and click the Play button and your text will appear on your image.
